I am new to microlight flying. I am training in an IKARUS C42 which i have only got 5 hours under my belt but as far as BMW engines are concerned I have owned a BMW x5 for most of this year and as far as engines are concerned this has to be one of the best built I have ever come across and very powerful, quiet and reliable. Now if thats anything to go by then if the microlight has a BMW engine fitted i would say great must be good. Hope this is of some use to you !
Can anybody give me any information about buying a three axis microlight with a BMW engine.(good or bad)
Many thanks

It means that you will have to fly very close behind all the other pilots. You should flash your landing light at them to tell them to get out of your way.
The HKS 700E is a horizantally opposed twin cyl air cooled unit, which looks very like a BMW motorcycle engine. In fact it was probably developed from it. It's been redesigned for microlight use though, ceramic cylinder liners for one.
I don't think engines that are designed for motor vehicles are generally suited for aircraft use. If you think most vehicles produce a bit of accelleration occasionally but spend a great deal of their lives in fifth gear at low revs, not under much stress - unlike most microlights really
As an aircraft inspector I would advise you not to touch it with a barge pole. I had the experience of looking at a few X-Airs with them fitted. Overweight/Underpowered and a nasty habit of blowing up. They were designed to operate at a certain rev limit... aircraft instillation is a different ball game. The ones I was involved with ended up using the 582 in the end. Keep clear.
