Im a 33 yr old newly unemployed man......(sold my company).....and due to the fact i have always worked behind a shop counter since i was young,i dont have a trade NOW..having all this time on my hands and sick of daytime tv i was thinking of getting myself my helicopters licence. What i wanted to know is..
1.Been quoted £13500 for my PPL in a R22 and £14500 in a Schweizer based on 45 hours....id this a good deal or is it a bit steep???
2.My brother lives in South Africa and looking at there web sites i can get the same deal for £8500...is this the same licence as the UK or is it not worth a carrot in the UK??
3.What are the job oppertunities over here if i get my CPL???
As long as the South Africa licesne is JAA you will be fine, don't think jobs are that great at the moment, most jobs you will require an IR as well as your CPL so you will be looking at about £75,000 plus depending on where you train.
Most trainees are looking at 50-60hrs before their skills test, 45hrs is the minimum in accordance with the jaa/caa, I dont know of anyone who has completed their licence in 45hrs.
£14k is about right for a 55hr pass depending on where you train, if you are going all the way you should look into buying your own r22 and depending on your circumstances leaseback to your provider, £85/£95 per hour dry, remembering you will be paying all the standing/fixed costs etc. Would be an idea to pass your ppl (H) first and class 1 Medical then possibly buy/share a low time R22 for hour building, keep it for a year (remembering standing/fixed costs ie insurance, maintainance C of A etc and get as many hours in as poss 200+ as long as the ship has no major replacements you could save a few bob in the long term, sell with zero hrs for £10k-17k .
