Sometimes a nice Autumn or Winters day is ok for learning to fly. The lack of powerful thermals makes for a less bumpy ride and more time fine tuning your skills.
Flying in this country is notorious for being a "book 5 and cancel 4" rule due to weather ruining it.
Just be prepared to cancel and don't get your hopes up until you've seen the weather for the day from your Instructor / Met Office. Its always better to wait for a nice day anyway - you enjoy it and its your money.
It doesn't matter what time of year you start your PPL, but it is best to aim to finish it between late spring and early autumn. You will then have the good weather at the time when you will be doing your cross-country flying.
Hi Guy id reccomend you start as early as possible, because british weather will keep you down more then you think, an youll get frustrated, before spending any of your cash go to an AME (authurised medical examiner) and get a class 2 medical and seperate eye check, thats requirements for jar ppl , cheers
I continue doing intensive ppl's right through the winter, ok the weather is always never going to be the UK's best sales feature but most days have flyable times and unless it a cyclone !!! then I manage to get one or two flights in each day for full time students, the key is being available when the weather means we can fly.
I find the biggest winter problem is the short days as often any summer weather problems I can get flying late in the evening if the day has been called off due to WX. While flying in the UK in winter is far far too cold, so long as the a/c have good heaters you can get some brilliant conditions for flying,
cold high pressure systems I do look forward to in winter. unlimited viz and less thermals = brill flying..... just with 7 vests on LOL
Interestingly I find that schools that I work with are often a lot more quiet in winter and when it comes to getting a knock down deal, especially if they know you are wanting a full PPL you can get some good ones.
Oh and if you dont fly over the winter get them pesky exams outa the way, one less thing !
