Hi I'm in the South West, semi-retired, and would like to study for and sit the exams before I do the practical flying training. Could anyone tell me how it is done? And the cost? Do I need to go to a ground school first, is that the way? Many thanks, sorry its such a newbie question. Terry

Re: where to take exams and cost?
Hi Terry, Welcome. You don't need to do ground school but there will still be a fair amount of study to do before sitting the exams. Having an instructor to hand will be a great help though in explaining things. Any registered school will be able to oversee the actual exams, cost will vary but recon on about £30-£50 each (7 of them) for the written ones and upto maybe £100 for the practical radio exam. Best advice though would be just to get on with the flying anyway as a lot of what you'll learn in theory will be reinforced bt the practical. You say you're in the South West, if you're anywhere near Compton Abbas get along there and see what's on offer. All the best.
Once you have passed the first exam you have 18 months in which to complete the rest.
When you have passed all the writtens you have a further 24 months to complete your flight training and pass the skills test.
Many thanks for the replies. The idea to take a couple of flights first is worthwhile, and I intend to contact a couple of local schools with a regard to a couple of lessons and scheduling the exams. I'm 63 years old, so this is very much a hobby thing, something I've wanted to do for a long time. A pity, the CPL route and career looks interesting.
